Then & Now

Cornwell's Cody Cody
An Early Fairoaks Sire:
Ch. Cornwell's Cody CDX, STDc
(Tegtmeyers Ringo x Tegtmeyers Bronze Lady)
He was known for his "high in trial" obedience abilities (though he had a sense of humor and could make it an all or nothing day when he felt like it). This fellow didn't start trying for working titles until he was 9 years old. In those days, it was a search-and-find game to locate handy ASCA events... so we drove to in Tennessee and Michigan! He was finished at the 1974 ASCA of Michigan Spring Specialty - B.O.W.

In 1973 the ASCA show conformation program began.  Cody quickly finished his conformation championship.  At 9 years of age he entered his first stock dog trial and without having seen cattle in over 5 years, he earned his Started Trial Dog title on cattle.  He earned the Triple Crown for being titled in all three areas of competitions.  His real love was working cattle, a job at which he excelled. He was quiet and forceful, with excellent driving ability and balance.

Cody was a beautiful, classy individual with a sensitive, protective temperament. He is the sire of champion, working and obedience titled progeny that went on to have a strong influence on early breeding programs.

During the early 70's we had many good dogs and continued to raise nice puppies and, as we learned, a definite plan was beginning to form.  We began to pick and choose dogs that would be the foundation of our bloodline.  In 1973 we made what was our most influential purchase.  This was a 7 week old dark red tri male puppy from Joe Taylor in Moab, Utah.  We named him Chulo Rojo of Fairoaks (pronounced Chewlo RoHo) which means red rascal in Spanish.  Little did we know what a phenomenal influence this pup would be.  We raised and bought a lot of pups in those early days, always looking for those special qualities.  Some stayed and many went but Chulo quickly became special.  Special to us and unique within the breed.

HOF Ch. Chulo Rojo of Fairoaks ROM XIII

After learning that the USASA (United States Australian Shepherd Association - AKC) Register of Merit Program was open to early foundation dogs whose lives were lived out before the AKC recognition of the breed, I dug into my records and found that Chulo fulfilled the requirements.

We are very proud to announce that HOF (ASCA) Sire, Ch. Chulo Rojo of Fairoaks is now the recipient of the Register of Merit Excellence III Sire award, the highest offered to date.

To receive this prestigious award a dog must sire 25 offspring that earn titles (with a minimum of 3 in each category) in conformation, working, and obedience. Although only the first title in each category on each dog is all that counts for that dog, the majority of his titled progeny were titled in more than one field and at higher levels.  We are indeed glad that USASA is recognizing the contributions of early sires and dams.

Ch. Chulo Ch. Chulo

Chulo was a striking individual with the style, quality, and presence that turned heads. His type and physical soundness was outstanding. His working heritage showed in every step.  His gorgeous deep red color drew attention from one and all. At a time in the country when red was not yet popularized, he was a red of national prominence.  We considered his temperament perfect. He was eager, bright, tough and forgiving.  Friendly, with keen intelligence and an uncanny sense of humor, he loved people but was protective and determined.  He was a great individual and well ahead of his time.

Chulo finished his ASCA championship quickly, winning some major specialties at that time.  Although shown just a couple of times a year he continued to defeat the top winning dogs of his generation and for several generations after that.  He had Best of Breed wins in 8 states and made the final cut at the ASCA National Specialty in 1979.  Among his most impressive wins, the ones that we are most proud of were Best of Breed at the Great Lakes Specialty at 8 years and again at 9 years of age, over some top winning young champions of national fame.

As his first pups began to mature, his genetic strength and ability to produce his qualities and outstanding features became evident. Equally important, the more puppies he sired the more evident it became that not only did he produce physical and mental quality, but that he did not carry or produce the genetic problems that are carried recessively, making him a breed paragon.  His prepotency was certainly no accident, with three crosses to his sire Taylors Whiskey and four crosses to his grandsire Mansker's (Lamar's) Turk.

Chulo with his kitten friend, Smegal Chulo is an ASCA Honor Roll Sire and is an ASCA Hall of Fame Sire.  He is the sire of many champion, working titled dogs that have gone on to produce champion and working titled dogs, all with that distinct Chulo look.  He was a superior individual, physically, mentally and genetically and is the solid foundation on which our breeding program stands.

Cody died in 1984 at 14 1/2.  Chulo died in 1988 at 15 1/2.  They both lived long and productive lives (Chulo had 4 month old puppies when he died).  They both left behind a legacy that is unique and becoming more so every year in the modem Aussie world.  Because we continue to base our breeding program on the physical, mental and genetic qualities that we demand (based on the exacting standards of a single breeder) , the distinct look and spirit of the old-fashioned Aussie will continue to be available with the Fairoaks dogs.

Fairoaks Atreyu, STDd, OTDsc

(HOF Ch. Chulo Rojo of Fairoaks, ROMX III x Fairoaks Kegline Catalina)

Atreyu is an inbred son of our foundation sire, Ch. Chulo Rojo of Fairoaks (ASCA Hall of Fame Sire and USASA Register of Merit Sire XIII, their highest award).

Atreyu has a gorgeous head, strong, correctly balanced body; is striking in type, with that old-fashioned "Aussie-ness" that is becoming harder and harder to find. Atreyu had one leg in Advanced Cattle and Sheep when my health and family obligations ended his trialing. He has always had a lot of stock "savvy".

Chulo was 13 when Atreyu was born...that means that in one generation Atreyu goes back 28 years...the last producing grandson (as far as we know) of Taylors Whiskey and Ch. Las Rocosa Leslie CWD (recognized foundation breed pillars). All Aussies eventually go back to foundation dogs, but it can be genetically diluted by 6 or 7 generations...our dogs are minimally diluted, grassroots, foundation bloodstock.
